Central Mid-Levels Escalators - the walkway system

Hong Kong island is dominated by hilly terrain. The Central Mid-Levels escalator was build in 1993 to provide a better commute link between Central and Western Districts on Hong Kong Island. It is the longest covered walkway system in the world. It is over 800 meters long and elevates 135 meters.

The total travel time is 20 minutes, if you are not walking.

From 6:00–10:00 the escalator moves downhill and from 10:00-24:00 uphill.

The escalator only moves in one direction, but there is a walkway side by side.
